ED Report (24-25)

Dear supporters of the Hans Andersen Club:

In an age of AI products and instant information, why encourage grassroots children to read? Because stories and reading bring joy, creativity, positivity, and intergenerational harmony. Following our three service directions, last year we held 7,879 activities, served 101,154 participants, and partnered with over 200 schools and organisations.

Storytelling For Social Impact

We partnered for the first time with LCSD Hong Kong Public Libraries to promote reading on “spiritual healing,” “temperament improvement,” and “travelling footprints.” Thanks to veteran media professional Mr Tsang Chi‑wah as “Star Reading Ambassador.” Nearly 20 NGOs joined; participation far exceeded expectations.

▲ Storytelling session and various reading workshops are featured at the event . Children are guided to reflect on the meanings behind the stories through performances by HAC storytelling volunteers.

The event includes a “Reading Zone,” with a selection of 200 books covering three key  themes “spiritual healing,” “temperament improvement,” and “travelling footprints.”.

Embrace Social Inclusion

Lamma Island Centre’s picture books “Home of Dreams” and “A Journey with warmth” received strong praise, proving co‑creation across ages builds inclusion. We launched them at the 2025 Hong Kong Book Fair with our own booth, drawing many visitors and media. A third community picture book will launch in 2026. Our “Warm Love Love” project with HK Electric won the CIC Gold Award for social‑service collaboration.

▲We are excited to launch the second community picture book of Lamma Island, “A Journey with Warmth”. Together with the intergenerational creation team, a New Book Release Presenation successfully held at Book Fair 2025 to share interesting moments from the creative process.

▲Hong Kong Electric and HAC Lamma Island Centre won the Gold Award for “Outstanding Collaboration in Social Welfare Organizations.”

Cultivate Positive Mindset

Since 1985, Diana Boyd Wilson Centre has served Wang Tau Hom for 40 years, supporting generations of youth. Working with corporate and parent volunteers, we give grassroots children care, broaden their horizons, and help them grow. The recent “Fly with Me” programme gave children in residential care financial and life‑skills training for future independence.

▲We visited Wu Kai Sha Youth Village to promote reading among the youth living in the hostel, hoping that through reading, their minds and spirits can be nurtured and enriched.

Looking ahead, we believe “Dreams come from knowledge; knowledge begins with reading.” We hope you continue to join us in using creative story programmes to nurture positive minds and promote social inclusion.
