“New Horizons for Reading” Series
The launch of the “New Horizons for Reading” program is based on our understanding that school bullying has a profound impact on children and their growth. Children with bullying tendencies can be observed as early as 4 to 6 years old. Early intervention to help children with emotional education can reduce bullying or other deviant behaviors in the future and reduce the resulting social costs. Andersen will partner with the City University of Hong Kong, and the project started in 2015 and has lasted 9 years. Supported by grants from the Community Chest in 2020-23. In November 2023, it also received funding support and support from the Social Innovation Fund and Foreign Exchange Generating Points, allowing the project to continue to develop on a fee-based model and promote sustainable social benefits. The plan is based on the Social Information Processing Theory (Social Information Processing SIP), which has been proven to be effective in explaining children’s deviant behaviors in multiple international studies and seminars. According to the SIP theory, bullying occurs precisely because of deviations in children’s emotional management and cognitive styles. As a result, we developed the world’s first “Story Intervention Therapy”, which uses selected picture books as intervention and conducts evidence-based children’s story groups, which is an intervention method to effectively reduce bullying. In addition to teaching students how to recognize emotions, how to manage negative emotions, improve emotional intelligence, and reduce irritable impulses (including verbal and physical attacks, etc.), it also improves students’ communication and social skills, cultivates empathy, and builds a positive and harmonious campus.
Achievements in the “Reading New Horizons” project Pei Ran In 2018, the research results were published at the Berlin International Academic Conference. In 2022, he won the “Knowledge Transfer Excellence Award” of the City University of Hong Kong. In 2023, the related research “A qualitative method to examine the positive impact of a Storytelling intervention in reducing reactive and proactive aggression in young schoolchildren ” is featured in the highly regarded Applied Research in Quality of Life.
Personal finance skills for children is an important but often overlooked topic. Academic research shows that in the 21st century, the concept and mastery of personal financial management is one of the most important life skills. Learning should start at a young age to establish healthy financial management habits.
“Fairytale Financial Management” workshops, children’s story lectures and parent education lectures are extensions of the “Fairytale Financial Management Treasure House” project.
Children’s understanding of emotions must also be cultivated from early childhood. The earlier children can recognize their own emotions, the better they can manage them as they grow, improve their emotional intelligence, and cope with future life with confidence. The “Reading for Good Mood” series allows parents and children to learn to control their emotions together through picture books and activities.
The environment around children is equally important, especially the family, which has an absolute impact on children’s growth. We support parent-teacher cooperation. The “Storytelling Parents” series encourages parents to learn different topics with their children through storytelling, while also building a deeper parent-child relationship in the process.
Stories and picture books allow us to enter the world of children. This understanding is very important for parents, teachers and child caregivers. They can visualize various relatively profound value concepts and more effectively encourage children to practice them in their daily lives. The “Values Education” series is an extension of the teacher training workshops we conducted for the Education Bureau.
“Fairy Tale Financial Treasure House” Series
The “Fairy Tale Financial Treasure House” project from 2022 to 24 is funded by the Hong Kong Exchange Charitable Fund and the Hong Kong Community Chest. Through picture books, stories and experiential activities, children can easily learn correct financial management knowledge and develop good habits of making good use of money, self-discipline and sharing love.
We use picture book stories to guide children’s thinking, learn to distinguish between “needs” and “wants”, and set personal savings goals. The activities have also been extended to the family level, allowing parents to participate in learning how to accompany their children to learn the concepts of personal finance.
“Value Education” Series
Values education plays a vital impact on children’s development in many aspects, from personality to attitude towards handling things; from emotions to behavioral development; from understanding and fulfilling social and moral responsibilities to promoting social fairness and justice. Stories can effectively and vividly express these value concepts, allowing children to connect with the characters in the book and more effectively understand the value themes brought out in the book. Because the plot of the story can also closely follow students’ daily life, it allows them to have a better understanding of how the world works and their role in the world.
The “Values Education” series is an extension of the teacher training workshops we conducted for the Education Bureau.
